Utrecht is a sofa by Cassina, Italy, based on Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's armchair from 1935. The design is a clear expression of Neoplasticism, where geometric volumes, bold lines, and generous proportions create a distinctive architectural composition.
The deep seat and generous upholstery give the Utrecht 3-seater sofa the same visual character and comfort as the original armchair. Beneath the upholstery, the supporting structure of the seat and backrest is made from tubular steel with elastic webbing. The padding consists of polyurethane foam and polyester wadding, creating the sofa's characteristic volume and soft surfaces. A defining feature is the decorative stitching, which follows the sofa's pronounced contours and emphasises the relationship between its geometric forms and the textile upholstery. The result is a design in which construction, comfort, and graphic detailing come together in a cohesive expression.
