Daniel Östman 1970
With a design language characterized by architectural clarity, restraint, and precision, he has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary spatial design. In collaboration with NO GA, the brand of NO GA, he has designed the Don furniture series – a collection where his perspective on material, proportion, and context takes tangible form.
From an early age, he began working hands-on with materials by building guitars and crafting furniture. His interest deepened through studies in furniture making and design at Carl Malmsten’s school, where his craftsmanship was paired with theoretical understanding. This laid the foundation for the methodical and material-conscious approach that still defines his practice today.
This foundation was further developed at Parsons School of Design in New York, where Östman studied interior architecture, scenography, and art history. During his time at the school, he refined his method and formulated a process-driven approach in which ideas emerge through the interaction between space, material, and function. His methodology differs from a traditional architectural process and more closely resembles fashion design – dynamic, material-based, and ever-evolving, with a focus on the whole rather than on stand-alone objects.
Holistic design process
In the 1990s, he began his career in interior and furniture design. During this period, he contributed to the development of products and collections inspired by international references. The experience confirmed his ability to create cohesive environments where architecture, furniture, and detail work in harmony.
After launching his own practice in 2004, he quickly began receiving commissions from both private clients and companies, leading to projects in Sweden and abroad.
Since 2010, he has operated his studio in Stockholm with a focus on comprehensive assignments, often in private residential projects. He oversees the entire process – from architectural interventions to furniture design, color selection, textiles, and lighting. Projects develop step by step in close dialogue with the client, always starting from the perspective of the person who will live in the space. The interior is shaped based on life circumstances, needs, and what the individual wants to express with their home – rather than a predetermined style.
He does not view furniture as isolated objects but as parts of a larger composition. The room is seen as a surface where color, texture, and light work together to create balance and direction. There is no fixed formula – each project requires its own solution, and the expression takes shape organically throughout the process.
Inspiration and design language
As a designer, he is influenced by historical figures such as the French designer Jean-Michel Frank, whose simple yet exquisitely crafted furniture combined modernism with a refined sense of material and detail. Östman is inspired by the idea that simplicity can be elevated through precision, craftsmanship, and unexpected material pairings.
His work is thus characterized by balance, structural logic, and a strong focus on materials. Color, texture, and volume are used as building blocks in a composition rather than decoration. The result is a restrained yet clearly defined aesthetic in which the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts.
Collaboration with NO GA
The Don collection is designed exclusively for the NO GA brand and manufactured in Italy. The series is defined by clear proportions, carefully considered materials, and a balance that enhances spatial harmony. The collection includes the Don Sofa, with generous dimensions and firm comfort, and the Don Armchair, which builds on the same principles in a more compact format. Both pieces are available in Designer’s Choice combinations, where base and accent colors are selected by Daniel Östman to create harmony and structure.
