Rituals - Foscarini

The Rituals series, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba for Foscarini and launched in 2004, is based on mouth-blown glass with a worked surface and texture. The horizontal engravings filter the light and create an even, diffused spread. The result is lighting that works in several types of environments and contributes to a calm and balanced light quality in the room.

Rituals – Form and Light Distribution

Rituals is a lamp collection that includes table lamps, ceiling lamps, and pendant lamps. The characteristic diffusers are made of hand-blown glass with varying thickness, creating a texture with horizontal stripes and a distinct structure. The light passes through the glass and spreads softly into the room, while glare is limited.

The textured surface gives the lamps a tactile character and influences how the light is perceived. The result is a balanced lighting arrangement that works in, for example, living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas.

Materials and Finishes

The glass diffusers are manufactured through a process where the surface is shaped and treated to create the striped structure. This method means that variations occur between different pieces. The glass is combined with metal parts, often in a matte white finish, which creates a subdued overall look and allows the glass to be the primary element.

The material choices are selected to provide a balanced combination of function, quality, and durability, with both light diffusion and construction in focus.

Variants and Placement

The series is available in several sizes and shapes, including Rituals 1, Rituals 2, Rituals 3, and Rituals XL. The different models can be used individually or combined in groups to create more extensive installations.

The pendants are suitable above tables or in rooms with higher ceilings, while table lamps and ceiling lamps serve as complements in smaller spaces. The luminaires are designed for E27 sockets, and several models can be dimmed to adjust the light intensity.

Designers and Brand

In the Rituals series, Ludovica and Roberto Palomba have explored how the structure of glass affects light. The focus is on the material's properties and how these can be utilized in contemporary Italian design.

Foscarini, founded in 1981, develops lighting where each luminaire is shaped by material and technology. Rituals is an example of this approach, where the composition of the glass dictates both form and light distribution.
