4283 China Chair

The China Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner for Fritz Hansen in 1944. It is an armchair in a classic design with a comfortable, reversible seat cushion that is covered in leather. There are several different colors of leather to choose from. The China Chair is made of two types of wood, cherry wood with a matt varnish, or black ash.

The inspiration behind the design of the China Chair comes from the Chinese imperial thrones of the 17th and 18th centuries. While working on the China Chair, Hans J. Wegner particularly developed his design language in sculptural functionalism, for which he later became world-renowned. The China Chair is an excellent example of Wegner's skill in cabinetmaking and reflects his lifelong quest to understand the nature and possibilities of wood. This chair is the only one from Fritz Hansen that is made entirely of solid wood.
