Faïencerie de Gien is one of France’s most distinguished manufacturers of faience and tableware. Since its founding in 1821 in the Loire Valley, the brand has combined traditional craftsmanship with innovative design, creating ceramic pieces appreciated around the world.

Two Centuries of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Gien was founded by the English entrepreneur Thomas Hall, who recognised the potential of the French town of Gien thanks to its access to raw materials and strong craft traditions. Throughout the nineteenth century, production expanded rapidly and became renowned for its high quality, intricate decoration and artistic expression.

Over the years, Gien has drawn inspiration from French Renaissance aesthetics, classical European ceramics, Oriental patterns and contemporary design. This has resulted in a rich and diverse design language that continues to evolve across generations.

Iconic Patterns and Distinctive Details

Among Gien’s most recognisable signatures is the classic Pont aux Choux pattern, whose distinctive relief of small “rice grains” dates back to eighteenth-century France. The pattern remains a symbol of the manufacturer’s craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The famous Gien blue has also become an important part of the brand’s identity. This deep blue shade was introduced during the nineteenth century and continues to appear in both historic and contemporary collections.

Collaborations with Designers

In recent decades, Gien has collaborated with several renowned designers and creative figures, including Andrée Putman, Patrick Jouin and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Through these collaborations, the brand has continued to evolve its expression while preserving its rich heritage.

French Design with a Living Heritage

Today, Faïencerie de Gien is a member of the prestigious Comité Colbert and has been awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant distinction in recognition of its exceptional craftsmanship. With more than 200 years of experience, Gien continues to create faience where tradition, quality and French design meet in timeless collections for the table and the home.
