J.L. Møller is a Danish furniture manufacturer founded in 1944 in Aarhus by cabinetmaker Niels Otto Møller and his wife Kirsten Møller. The brand is known for its craftsmanship and production of furniture, primarily chairs, in solid wood. The range includes chairs, armchairs, and later also benches and tables, characterized by clean lines and natural materials. Each piece of furniture is manufactured with a focus on details and durability.
J.L. Møller - Danish Craftsmanship in Solid Wood
J.L. Møller was founded in 1944 in Aarhus, Denmark, by cabinetmaker Niels Otto Møller and his wife Kirsten Møller. They established the company in a converted bicycle shed, where Niels Otto personally crafted each piece of furniture and Kirsten was responsible for material procurement and customer relations. From the outset, they focused on bespoke furniture for dining rooms and living rooms. Niels Otto, himself a cabinetmaker and designer, had close insight into and control over the manufacturing process. The brand's design philosophy is based on highlighting the natural beauty of wood through simple and clean forms, which established Niels Otto as a leading figure in Danish modernism.
Niels Otto Møller's Design
Niels Otto Møller is the primary designer behind J.L. Møller's furniture. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of wood's properties and a pursuit of timeless design. In 1951, he launched his debut creations, the iconic chairs Model 71 and Model 55. These were immediately praised for their elegance and exquisite craftsmanship, and were, among other things, selected for Frank Lloyd Wright's ‘Hanna House’ in San Francisco. Over the following decades, Niels Otto dedicated himself to designing dining chairs and armchairs in pairs, often with several years of research and product development behind each model. Other well-known models include Model 78 and Model 62 from 1962, as well as Model 65 which was chosen by the Queen of Denmark for the royal yacht. J.L. Møller also offers benches and dining tables that complement the chair series.
Material Selection and Construction
J.L. Møller furniture is primarily made from high-quality solid wood. The choice of materials and the meticulous construction contribute to the furniture's durability and ability to age gracefully. The company has always strived to blend traditional craftsmanship with technological advancements to achieve superior quality in every J.L. Møller piece of furniture.
The construction is based on solid craftsmanship traditions, which guarantees stability and durability for every J.L. Møller piece of furniture. Over the years, the company has significantly expanded its production facility, from the original workshop of 50 m² to one of Denmark's largest furniture factories at 3,000 m² in 1961, and later to 7,000 m² during the 1970s. Despite the expansion, production has always remained rooted in the original facility in Aarhus, where each piece of furniture is still manufactured, assembled, and finished by hand in Denmark.
Collection for the Conscious Home
The J.L. Møller collection primarily includes seating furniture, such as chairs and benches, as well as tables, designed to complement each other. In addition to the early icons, Niels Otto Møller has introduced a range of acclaimed models over the years, such as the chairs Model 62 and Model 78 from 1962, and the bench series Model 63 from 1966. His son, Jørgen Henrik Møller, later contributed with chairs like Model 404, which can now be found in churches and cathedrals worldwide. In 2025, Model 14 was also introduced, the company's first full-scale production dining table in decades. Every J.L. Møller piece of furniture is the result of a meticulous process, from the selection of raw materials to the final finish.
