Daphine - Lumina

Daphne by Lumina is a lighting series focused on mobility and technical precision. Designed by Tommaso Cimini, the series is built on well considered construction where mechanics and form work in harmony. The result is a collection of fixtures with distinct expression and a consistent structure within modern Italian lighting design, where function and structure take center stage.

Daphine – Lumina

The Daphine series was designed in 1975 by Tommaso Cimini and later produced by the Italian design company Lumina, which he founded in 1980 in Arluno, outside Milan. The series is based on a construction where the direction of light can be adjusted with precision, focusing on control and mobility.

Form and Construction

Daphne is a lighting fixture with slender, articulated arms and an adjustable lamp head. The construction is based on a system of mechanical joints where the movement of the fixture is central. The balance between resistance and mobility is carefully calibrated, allowing the position to be adjusted without losing stability.

The expression is restrained and consistent. The technical components are integrated into the form, creating a cohesive overall impression where the construction is visible without dominating. The proportions are carefully refined and contribute to a clear relationship between the arm, head, and base.

Materials and Finish

The fixtures are primarily made of metal, with versions in powder-coated steel and anodized aluminum. Powder-coated surfaces provide a smooth and resistant finish, while anodized aluminum offers a durable surface with a more subdued luster.

The choice of materials is closely linked to the construction and selected to handle movement in joints and fittings. The combination of materials ensures that the fixture maintains its function over time, while the surfaces remain stable during frequent adjustment.

Series Structure

The Daphine series includes floor lamps, table lamps, and wall lamps, where the construction is consistent across all variants. Examples of models in the series are the table lamp Daphine Cloe, the floor lamp Daphine Terra Classic, and the wall lamp Daphine Parete.

The differences between the models primarily lie in scale, reach, and mounting, while the articulated system is common. Several models, such as Daphine LED, are equipped with integrated LED technology, providing an even light distribution and long lifespan. Some versions include dimmable functions that allow control over light intensity.

Light and Direction

A central part of the Daphine series' design is how light is shaped and directed. The lamp head is designed to provide concentrated and controlled light, where the spread can be influenced by positioning rather than by optical additions.

This allows the fixture to function as a tool for highly precise light control, where direction and distance directly impact the light pattern.

Tommaso Cimini and Lumina

Tommaso Cimini founded Lumina with the ambition to develop lighting design where construction and function form the basis of the design. The work with the Daphine series reflects an interest in mechanics and how light can be controlled through an adjustable construction.

Lumina is an Italian lighting company focused on materials, technology, and precision in manufacturing. Production takes place in Italy and is characterized by a consistent commitment to quality and long-term sustainability.
