The book shows over 400 large-format works and includes paintings, drawings, graphics and sculptures, along with installation images and portraits. Baselitz made his mark in the 1960s with an image language characterized by inverted motifs, fragmented compositions and existential figures. Series such as Heroes questioned post-war ideals and gave shape to a world of motifs where body, landscape and history were literally turned upside down. Through inversion he was able to free the structure of the image from its content and deepen his work with form and color. From the 1980s his practice expanded to sculpture in wood, often carved with an axe and chainsaw, and later also in bronze. The book follows this development thematically and chronologically, focusing on recurring motifs and the artist's relationship to myth and contemporary times. Texts by, among others, Richard Shiff, Jonathan Jones and Carla Schulz-Hoffmann contribute different perspectives.
