The book traces two parallel stories: the story of Finn Juhl's iconic Chieftain Chair, and the contemporary research into a previously unknown painting that may have influenced its creation. Through archival finds, auction materials and personal stories from a small group of collectors and design historians, a coherent picture emerges of a long-hidden chapter in Danish design history. The two stories move between different times and perspectives, but gradually begin to coincide. When Lot 242 appears at an auction in Chicago in the summer of 2021, a breakthrough occurs that leads to new knowledge about the very first version of Juhl's chair – its origin, identity and possible models.
It is an investigative publication that places Danish modernism in a new light and shows how design history can be deepened through private research and chance finds.
