More from Vitra
Bascule Lowback is a lounge chair from Swiss manufacturer Vitra, designed by Berlin-based Studio Œ. The lower back gives the model a more compact profile while retaining the Bascule series’ characteristic combination of soft upholstery, a loose-fitting fabric cover and responsive movement.
Beneath the upholstery is a concealed mechanism with automatic weight adjustment. It responds to shifts in body weight, allowing the chair to move continuously from an upright seating angle to a deeply reclined, almost horizontal position, without fixed settings or controls. Studio Œ drew inspiration from tailoring techniques used in fashion for the removable cover, which wraps around the structure like a jacket while allowing for the chair’s generous range of movement. Bascule Lowback features a frame made of powder-coated tubular steel and a solid oak base. The back cushion and armrests are filled with PET fibres made from post-industrial waste, while the seat is made from recyclable V-Foam. The cover is removable, and the chair’s individual components can be repaired or replaced as needed.
