Lounge Chair 43 is an armchair from the Finnish brand Artek. The chair was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1937 and builds on his work with bentwood and laminated birch. The construction consists of a cantilevered frame in form-bent solid birch slats, a material that makes it possible to create curves and bends with stability and flexibility. The seat and back are made of linen ribbons that form a woven surface and provide support while the chair's structure remains visible.
The armchair combines the bent wooden frame with the linear structure of the textile and shows how birch slats can be used as an alternative to steel tube structures. The cantilevered shape allows the frame to run continuously from base to back and defines the chair's profile. As a lounge chair, the model is intended for sitting in, for example, living rooms, lounge areas and other interiors where a low piece of seating furniture is used for resting.
