Base Ghisa is a table lamp designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni in 1953. With its compact size and pared-back geometry it is one of the designer’s most minimalist works. The name refers to the cast iron that forms a central part of the lamp’s construction and gives it a sturdy architectural character.
A balanced structure rises from the solid base. Its angles and inclinations create a light appearance that contrasts with the robust material. The angled lampshade echoes Caccia Dominioni’s Monachella and is designed to conceal the light source. This reduces direct glare while spreading light across a generous area. The name Base Ghisa also carries a local reference. In Caccia Dominioni’s hometown of Milan ”ghisa” was used as a nickname for the city’s police officers whose dark helmets were associated with cast iron. The combination of functional geometry and concentrated light with subtle references gives the lamp its distinctive expression.
