EK61 Opal is a pendant lamp from the Danish brand Carl Hansen. The lamp was designed in 1961 by Esben Klint, son of architect and designer Kaare Klint and grandson of architect and furniture designer P.V. Jensen-Klint. The original design was intended to be made of pleated plastic, but was too complex to be put into production at the time, and the drawings were therefore preserved in the family archive. The pendant lamp is now being launched in a version where the pleated, elliptical shape is made of mouth-blown opal glass. The white glass is combined with oak details, which are turned and processed by hand. The design of the wooden details draws references from traditional Chinese lanterns and forms a contrast to the pleated glass body. The combination of opal glass and wood gives the lamp a soft, indirect light that is suitable for placement above a table or as general lighting in different rooms.
