Eliana Gerotto 1951
Eliana Gerotto was born in 1951 in Venice. She grew up in a city defined by architectural richness, tradition, and a constant interplay of light and shadow. The visual heritage of Venice shaped her way of seeing form, material, and spatial relationships.
After her upbringing in Venice, she moved to Milan, where she studied communication technology at the Fondazione Davide Campari. The studies provided her with a structural and analytical foundation in visual communication. It also marked the beginning of her career as a graphic designer.
At the start of her professional life, she worked for the French magazine Elle and participated in projects connected to the Venice Biennale. Her early work existed at the intersection between image and system, between identity and surface.
From graphic design to product design
Over time, her practice expanded. She moved from graphic design into product design, interior design, and jewellery design. What unites all her expressions is a precise sensitivity to material and a desire to create clear, functional objects with a strong visual presence.
She has often acted both as a designer and as a visual consultant for Italian companies. A recurring quality in her work is the balance between the technical and the tactile.
One of her most well-known projects is her collaboration with Patricia Urquiola. Together, they designed the Caboche lamp for Foscarini. The lamp consists of transparent spheres in plastic that capture and reflect light. It combines technical construction with a decorative character.
Caboche has become a reference point in contemporary Italian design. It demonstrates how Eliana Gerotto works with light as a formal element rather than purely as a function.
Eliana Gerotto has never limited herself to a single field of design. Her work shows a fluidity between disciplines, along with a clear and consistent idea of what good design should be.
It is not the spectacular that interests her, but what endures over time. The form should carry, the material should speak, and the objects should relate to their surroundings with both respect and presence.
