No. 1 Sofa 2003 was the first sofa that Børge Mogensen designed for Fredericia and marked the beginning of a close collaboration. It was designed in 1955 with a vision of combining a modern expression with refined craftsmanship and introduced many of the principles that would characterize Mogensen's later work. When the sofa was launched, it represented a new direction in Danish furniture design. Its modern silhouette and thoughtful details offered a new interpretation of the traditional sofa, reflecting Mogensen's ability to create furniture that was both forward-looking and deeply rooted in craftsmanship.
The tightly upholstered wooden frame is softened by loose, replaceable button cushions. All of this is in line with Mogensen's aspiration to create functional furniture that would enrich people's everyday lives. The carefully balanced proportions combine a solid wooden frame with softly sculptural cushions. The loose, buttoned cushions add both comfort and character, while balancing the precise construction of the upholstered frame. This contrast between structure and softness became a recurring feature in Mogensen's designs.
It is an upholstered sofa with separate seat and back cushions and replaceable legs in solid wood, assembled with metal screws. It comes with an inner frame of solid wood and plywood and replaceable cushions in HR or CMHR foam, covered in fabric and fastened with buttons. The upholstery is not removable. The back cushions are reversible with fabric on both sides.
