Frederica Furniture
Since its beginnings in the early 20th century, Fredericia Furniture has grown into one of Denmark’s most influential names in furniture design. The company was originally founded as Fredericia Stolefabrik and still carries the same drive to create furniture with a distinct identity, well-considered functionality, and lasting quality.
A defining moment in the company’s history came in 1955 when businessman Andreas Graversen acquired the company. He initiated a close collaboration with Børge Mogensen, whose ideas on materials, craftsmanship, and functionalism helped shape a unique design language – one that continues to define the brand’s collections today.
Fredericia has always maintained a clear design philosophy, where longevity, craftsmanship, and material awareness are central. Through collaborations with both established designers and new voices, Fredericia has developed a design expression that is contemporary yet rooted in tradition. Under the current leadership of Thomas Graversen, Fredericia continues to be driven by the same design sensibility and material understanding that have defined the family’s work for generations.
Materials and sustainable design with long-lasting value
In Fredericia’s furniture production, form, function, and craftsmanship are carefully balanced – without compromising on comfort or aesthetics. Each product is developed with the ambition to stand the test of time, both visually and functionally. This is achieved through sustainable material choices such as oak, walnut, and vegetable-tanned leather, as well as through constructions where proportions, details, and seating comfort are meticulously calibrated.
For Fredericia Furniture, this is more than a design principle – it is a sustainability strategy. Long lifespan is considered the most responsible way to produce furniture. That’s why the company selects natural materials that age beautifully and can be repaired or reused rather than replaced. Production takes place mainly in Denmark and Northern Europe, in close collaboration with suppliers who share the company’s values on quality and traceability.
Since 2023, Fredericia has been certified as a B Corp, affirming the company’s long-term commitment to environmental and social responsibility. The ambition is clear: to create furniture that adds value not just to interiors, but also to the broader circular ecosystem.
Well-established products that carry a legacy forward
Over the years, Fredericia Furniture has developed a broad range of products that have become influential in modern design. Classic pieces such as The Spanish Chair, designed by Børge Mogensen, are clear examples of the brand’s design philosophy. Made from solid oak and vegetable-tanned saddle leather, the chair ages beautifully over time and demonstrates how robust construction can be combined with a strong aesthetic expression.
The J39 series, designed by Børge Mogensen in 1947, is also a defining part of Fredericia’s collection. With its solid wood construction and woven paper cord seat, the chair represents Mogensen’s idea of functional, accessible, and durable design. Over time, J39 has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Danish furniture tradition and is used in both private homes and public spaces.
The Spanish Chair was launched in 1958, yet it is still perceived as contemporary thanks to its thoughtful construction and the authentic expression of its material choices.
A more recent example is Swoon – an elegant and sculptural lounge chair introduced in 2016 by Space Copenhagen. With its molded shell and soft cushions, it blends elegance and comfort, making it a popular choice both for private homes and exclusive hotel interiors.
A contemporary example is the Calmo series, designed by Hugo Passos. With its generous proportions, soft forms, and focus on everyday comfort, the series shows how Fredericia continues to develop furniture where function, materials, and long-term use are central.
Fredericia Furniture demonstrates how long-term design thinking leads to furniture that does not follow fleeting trends but instead sets references for the future. The collection includes pieces for both living spaces and work environments, all crafted with the same level of precision and attention to detail.
Contemporary relevance through design and vision
Today, Fredericia is led by Thomas Graversen, who continues to build on the brand’s core values. A key strategic move was made in 2020 when Fredericia acquired furniture company Erik Jørgensen. This not only expanded the product range but also added new dimensions of comfort and upholstered furniture expertise – all while maintaining a consistent focus on material quality and sustainable design.
Interest in Fredericia Furniture is largely driven by the brand’s ability to merge history with a modern design approach. Many who seek out the brand are looking for design that combines sustainability, quality, and an architectural expression – without compromising on functionality. By balancing a strong heritage with openness to new ideas, Fredericia Furniture remains a key reference point in contemporary design.
Collaborations with designers such as Jasper Morrison, Cecilie Manz, and GamFratesi highlight how the brand continues to evolve its expression while maintaining its link to fundamental values and original functionalism. It’s a design language that both references the work of Mogensen and Ditzel and evolves with the times.
Thoughtful design with a focus on longevity
The brand creates furniture where every aspect – from material selection to construction – is thoroughly considered. The products are not dictated by temporary trends but are designed for long-term use. These are pieces made to be used, passed on, and appreciated over time.
At NOGA, you’ll find a curated selection of Fredericia Furniture – furniture that combines simplicity, character, and sustainable design, where precision and quality always take center stage.
