PK54A Extension Ring is an extension ring from the Danish brand Fritz Hansen. PK54A is designed for the round dining table PK54 and builds on Poul Kjærholm's work with materials and construction.
The extension ring is placed around the original table and extends the table surface with a wooden ring. The combination represents a meeting between stone and wood, where the hard surface of the table is complemented by a softer material expression. When the ring is installed, the character of the table changes while providing more space for plates and table setting around the table.
Poul Kjærholm was a trained cabinetmaker at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and had a particular interest in construction materials, including steel. In 1955, he began a collaboration with furniture manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen, a collaboration that continued for the rest of Kjærholm's life.
