The bilingual edition collects 336 games and actions that challenge everyday routines and activate the senses – without the need for props, just the body and the will to participate. The games were created by Carsten Höller, an artist with a scientific background, known for his interest in perception, psychology and the role of participation in art. Here, physical activity and mental shifts meet in simple but often unexpected instructions. It can involve shouting at the wrong time, doing a somersault without warning or inserting odd phrases into conversations. Some games are social, others are meant to be played alone. The ideas have emerged since 1992 and reflect influences from dadaism, surrealism, literature and art history. Each game is accompanied by photographs and works by, among others, Inez & Vinoodh, Nan Goldin, August Sander, Salvador Dalí and Chantal Akerman, along with material from Höller's own archive.
