domus 1928–1939 is an architecture book from the German publisher Taschen that republishes selected issues from the first eleven years of the magazine domus, founded by Gio Ponti in 1928. The book documents a crucial stage in the emergence of modernism – with a focus on architecture, industrial design, interior design and furniture design.
During this period, the International Style was established, characterized by a strict design language and functional ideals. Through domus reporting, the reader gains insight into the works of architects and designers such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Alvar Aalto and Richard Neutra. The content ranges from tall steel buildings to tubular furniture and shows how light, geometry and materials were used to shape a new, industrially influenced contemporary era.
The book is edited by Charlotte and Peter Fiell and serves both as historical source material and as a visual overview of the decade when the design language of modernism took shape.
