USM furniture

USM is a Swiss design company with roots in engineering. It was founded in 1885 by Ulrich Schärer in Münsingen, originally producing ironworks and window frames. In the late 1940s, the company shifted focus toward metal and sheet processing. This laid the foundation for what would become one of Europe’s most iconic modular systems: USM Haller.

USM

The company was taken over by Ulrich’s grandson, Paul Schärer, who in 1961 changed direction by transforming the factory from a large production plant into a modern industrial enterprise. Schärer commissioned Swiss architect Fritz Haller to design a new factory building with extensive space for administrative offices. The collaboration proved so successful that together they created the groundbreaking storage system now known as USM Haller.

The system is based on a technically precise construction in which ball joints, steel tubes, and metal panels form a flexible whole. Each part is interchangeable and can be freely combined, making it easy to adapt the furniture as needs evolve.

The design language is clean and structural, allowing room for both functionality and visual precision. The furniture works just as well as storage solutions as it does architectural elements in a wide range of interiors.

A system built for architecture

USM represents form and function in technical harmony. Rather than following passing trends, the design is based on a systematic approach. That’s why USM is often chosen for projects where quality, durability, and adaptability are key.

The system can be reconfigured, expanded, or completely redesigned over time—without compromising the overall aesthetic. Architects and interior designers appreciate the ability to create structured solutions that are both flexible and consistent in their expression.

Adaptable design with long-lasting value

With a wide range of colors, finishes, and sizes, USM modules can be tailored to suit any setting, environment, or preference. Whether you want to create a striking contrast in a minimalist space or have the furniture blend seamlessly into an existing interior, the system offers the tools to do so.

USM Haller is built on a circular mindset, where every component can be assembled, disassembled, and reused without loss of quality. Production in Switzerland is characterized by energy efficiency, recyclable materials, and long-term resource management.

The company’s sustainability work is certified by Greenguard Gold for low emissions and a healthy indoor environment, and by ISO 14001 for environmental management and resource efficiency. Additionally, USM has been awarded Cradle to Cradle Silver in Social Fairness, recognizing its responsible production and fair working conditions.

The USM storage system is a recurring feature in international design projects, used widely in everything from homes to showrooms, studios, and office environments. The fact that the furniture is built for longevity makes it a conscious and sustainable choice.

Modular design with Swiss precision

Behind USM’s industrial aesthetic lies a long-term vision that goes beyond conventional furniture design. The system is still manufactured in Münsingen, with the same focus on precision and quality that defined its origins. Swiss engineering runs through every component—from production to final installation.

That USM Haller remains in use and continues to evolve more than 50 years after its launch is a testament to its lasting relevance. It’s a system that allows for flexible thinking and concrete implementation—whether in a constantly changing home or a work environment that demands structure.
