Vitra

What sets Vitra apart is its ability to blend technical precision with aesthetic clarity. The Fehlbaums initially ran a shopfitting business before deciding to enter the furniture market – a decision that would shape the company’s future. It was Willi Fehlbaum who early on secured the rights to produce furniture by the American design duo Charles and Ray Eames in Europe. This marked the beginning of a collaboration that laid the foundation for Vitra’s design identity, where creativity, ergonomics, and longevity come together.

One of the most iconic outcomes of this collaboration is the Eames Lounge Chair from 1957. With its curved wooden shell and leather seat, it’s an example of how form and comfort can coexist. Today, the Eames Lounge Chair is considered one of the most significant modern seating designs.

The creative partnership with Charles and Ray Eames also demonstrated Vitra’s ambition to build long-term relationships with some of the world’s most influential designers. Other important names that have shaped the brand’s history include George Nelson, Verner Panton, and Jean Prouvé, as well as contemporary designers such as Barber & Osgerby, who are behind the Mikado armchair and the Mariposa sofa seriesfor Vitra.

The design language of Eames and Vitra

Charles and Ray Eames had a clear vision: design should simplify everyday life and contribute to a better living experience. This philosophy remains central to Vitra’s work. The Eameses’ influence goes beyond individual pieces – it represents a holistic approach to design as a tool for improving life. Many of their creations, such as the Eames Plastic Chair, are now iconic examples of how function and form can coexist in contemporary design. Another example is the leather desk chair, Aluminium EA 117.

Ray Eames had a particular interest in color and materials, and her sense of visual balance is visible in many of Vitra’s most appreciated products. Through its continued work, Vitra keeps the couple’s legacy alive and relevant in a modern context. The high-gloss plastic chair became a sensation and received numerous awards. One of the earliest examples is now housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Vitra lighting – function in a new form

A natural extension of Vitra’s design language is its lighting collection. Through carefully selected materials, sculptural shapes, and a thoughtful approach to how light interacts with space, Vitra creates lamps that combine function with visual clarity. The collection includes the Akari series by Isamu Noguchi, where rice paper and organic forms contribute to a warm, atmospheric glow.

Sustainability and production

By combining carefully chosen materials with a clear focus on long-term form and function, Vitra creates furniture that stands the test of time – both in terms of quality and aesthetics. Sustainability is not just a concept but a concrete part of production. Every decision – from the type of wood to logistics solutions – is made with future impact in mind.

This is also reflected in Vitra’s work with furniture for different environments, where, for example, wooden lounge furniture combines natural materials with a timeless design language.

Campus, museums, and design culture

Beyond its products, Vitra has also established itself as a hub for architecture and design culture. In Weil am Rhein, Germany, near Basel, lies the Vitra Campus – a unique centre for design and architecture that brings together buildings by world-renowned architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Tadao Ando.

The site is also home to the Vitra Design Museum, one of the world’s leading design museums, where visitors can explore exhibitions that highlight both classic and contemporary designers. The museum is not only a tribute to design history but also a platform for discussions about the future of living and working.
