Chair 68 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 for the Finnish furniture manufacturer Artek. It is still a timeless icon and as modern today as it was then. The chair was originally designed for the library in Viipuri, Finland, which was because the designer won a competition to furnish and create a floor plan for the library. In addition to planning how the building would look, he also designed lamps and interior details that are still there today, as well as the 68 chairs.
The chair's frame has a wide base unlike many of the furniture architect's other chairs, and this is to create a higher stability and function. As in many other pieces of furniture by Alvar Aalto, you can clearly see his signature in the form of the slightly curved legs in an L.
The chair is made of molded birch and is available in clear lacquered birch with several seats and completely white or black lacquered.
