Strand – Muuto

The Strand Lighting Series – design language and materials

The design of Strand from Muuto is distinguished by its complex yet uniform shape, inspired by cloud formations. At the core of its construction is the innovative cocoon material, a sprayed polymer that creates a fine, almost thread-like surface. This material allows for a diffusion of light that is both warm and pleasant, eliminating harsh shadows and creating an inviting atmosphere. The soft, playful form conceals the light source and instead highlights the volume and texture of the fixture.

In this way, the lighting becomes not just a functional component but a design object that adds character and visual fascination to the room. The various dimensions of the pendant lamps, such as those with a diameter of 40 cm, 60 cm, and 80 cm, are complemented by the table lamp format, offering flexibility for different spatial needs and design visions.

The design vision behind Strand by Benjamin Hubert

Benjamin Hubert, the award-winning designer behind Strand, is known for his focus on material innovation and process-driven design. His work on this lighting series for Muuto exemplifies a drive to explore new techniques and aesthetic expressions. Muuto, a design company rooted in Danish design history, strives to deliver modern lighting and furniture that challenge conventions while remaining functional and beautiful.

The collaboration with Hubert resulted in a product family that captures a sense of lightness and movement, which is significant for both Hubert's and Muuto's design philosophy. This series helps set the mood in a room, whether in a living room, over a dining table, or as accent lighting in a more formal setting.

Versatile placement and atmosphere

Muuto Strand pendant lamps are designed to be versatile in their placement and function. Their ability to emit a diffused, ambient light makes them ideal for creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere in living rooms and bedrooms. In the hallway, the lamp sets a soft tone right inside the door, where it can be advantageously matched with the hooks in the Muuto Dots series for a harmonious and cohesive entrance.

Over a dining table or a kitchen island, a single larger pendant lamp, for example, the one with an 80 cm diameter, can serve as a central focal point and offer adequate lighting for social gatherings. For larger spaces or to create a more dynamic lighting design, several of Muuto's Strand lamps can be placed in a group, accentuating the room's dimensions and adding a sculptural dimension.

While the pendant lamps define the room's volume, the table lamp works excellently on a side table or in a deep window recess where it adds a sculptural dimension at closer range. The entire lighting series is dimmable, offering the possibility to adjust brightness according to both room and usage. The table lamp is equipped with a discreet dimmer on the cord, making it easy to switch between functional light and a softer, more subdued glow. The consistent dimmability provides increased flexibility in interior design and makes the series equally well-suited for general lighting as for mood lighting.
