Fritz Hansen's classic 3100 Ant was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1952, specifically for the dining room of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk. Ant was created through a revolutionary manufacturing process for veneer furniture. The seat and backrest are made in one piece, consisting of nine layers of veneer layered with two layers of Indian cotton and pressed into shape over steam. This has given the chair its delicate and stylish shell, made from a whole piece of wood, the backrest can also be reclined, adding to its elevated level of comfort. Ant is available in a range of woods. Ant has neat chrome-plated steel legs and is available with three or four legs.

Ant has made a big mark in Danish design history and has also laid the foundations for the popular Series 7 and Gran Prix chairs. But Ant almost never went into production. When the sketches for the chair were presented, they were met with skepticism, but Jacobsen was so confident in his design that he promised Fritz Hansen he would buy the chairs himself if no one else did. Fortunately, Jacobsen was right. Ant was a success and is still a beloved chair today, launched in several variations.
