Kaiser idell - Fritz Hansen - A Series of Technical Precision
Kaiser idell lamps represent fundamental characteristics of modernism. Their design is based on geometric shapes such as the sphere, circle, and cylinder. A central part of the construction is the asymmetrical shade, which provides directed light. The patented ball joint, developed by Christian Dell, allows the user to precisely adjust the lamp's head. This makes the lamps versatile for various lighting needs.
The frame is made of steel or brass. The surface treatment varies between powder-coated finishes in colors such as matte black, black, white, dark green, and easy grey. Powder coating provides a matte, even surface that is resistant to wear and easy to clean. Alternatively, versions with chrome-plated details are available, which provide a shiny and reflective surface.
Variants and Functional Versatility
The Kaiser idell series includes a wide range of lamps, adapted for different environments and functions. The assortment includes table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps, and pendant lamps. Table lamps can be used at a desk. Floor lamps can be placed in the living room, for example, next to an armchair or sofa, where they provide flexible general lighting or reading light. Wall lamps can be used in hallways and bedrooms to create atmospheric lighting or serve as functional light sources. Pendants and ceiling lamps can be placed over a dining table or in an entrance, where they provide an even light distribution over larger areas. Each variant maintains the series' distinctive design language and technical precision, making them suitable for both private homes and public environments.
The Designer Christian Dell
Christian Dell was a German silversmith and designer, active in the early 20th century. He studied in Offenbach and at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar, and later worked as a workshop master at Bauhaus in Weimar. Dell's design philosophy was characterized by a pursuit of functional simplicity and precision. He began designing lighting for Gebr. Kaiser & Co. in 1926. His work on the Kaiser idell series, where the name is a combination of the word "idea" and his surname, demonstrates his engineering artistry and modernist approach. Dell is recognized for his ability to combine technical innovation with a clear aesthetic vision.
Fritz Hansen – design heritage
Fritz Hansen, an established Danish design company, took over the production of the Kaiser idell series through the acquisition of the lighting brand Lightyears in 2015. The company has a long history of collaborations with prominent designers. By including the Kaiser idell lamps in its assortment, Fritz Hansen manages the legacy of Christian Dell's groundbreaking design. They ensure that the lamps continue to be produced with high quality and respect for the original design language, thereby contributing to making this part of design history accessible to a modern audience.
