LC - Cassina

The LC Collection is a range of designer furniture from Cassina. The series combines an exposed, structural steel tube frame with loose seat cushions – a concept that challenged the prevailing ideas of furniture construction and design at the time by separating the support surface from the frame. This deconstruction and rationalization of form was an architectural statement.

LC2 and LC3

The collection offers a variety of models, designed to meet different architectural and spatial requirements. The LC2 armchair and its matching LC2 sofas, with their cubist proportions of 67 cm in height and 70 cm in depth, are known for their distinct dimensions and thick cushions. These are pieces where comfort and geometric precision meet in a defined volume. For larger spaces or a different visual character, the LC3 series offers an alternative, with the two-seater version measuring 62 cm in height and 73 cm in depth. LC3 features a lower and wider silhouette, often preferred for its more relaxed appearance. Regardless of the model, all variants feature a strict frame of chrome-plated or lacquered steel tubes, acting as the primary supporting structure – a clear expression of industrial precision. The materials are often leather or fabric, chosen for their durability and tactile quality.

LC4 Chaise Longue and Ergonomic Rationality

The LC4 chaise longue represents a more dynamic and user-driven approach within the series. Its adjustable frame, resting on a fixed base, allows for personalized reclining angles. This focus on the human body and its ergonomic needs was central to the modernist design philosophy. The LC4 is available in various finishes, including materials such as black or brown hairyskin and leather in a range of colors. A specific model, the Noire chaise longue, offers a more monochromatic aesthetic. The chaise measures 56 cm in width and 69 cm in height. With a depth of 163 cm, it creates an ergonomic space for relaxation.

LC1 – A Lighter Silhouette

Another key piece in the series is the LC1 armchair, which, with its lightweight, folding steel frame and leather-covered seat, emphasizes portability and functionalism. Charlotte Perriand, who was instrumental in realizing the prototypes, contributed material expertise and a functionalist approach that balanced the architectural vision of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Their collaboration resulted in a series that remains equally relevant in office settings and private residences. The LC1 has a steel frame in either chrome or black, with a leather seat and backrest.

LC10 and LC12

The LC Collection is completed by several tables, with the LC12 embodying the same rational design language as the seating pieces. The table is defined by its clear construction, where a thin glass top rests freely on a minimalist steel frame. It is available in various heights and dimensions, suitable as a coffee table paired with an LC2 armchair, or as a larger dining table. The material combination of steel and glass highlights graphic clarity and reduction, making the table a complementary surface that does not detract from the volumetric presence of the seating.

Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Jeanneret

The design trio were all members of L’Union des Artistes Modernes, a movement driven by French modernist architects and artists. Their collaboration was founded on a shared vision of a new industrial aesthetic. Together, they aimed to create furniture that was not only aesthetically progressive but also rational for industrial production.

Cassina

Cassina is the sole manufacturer with exclusive rights to produce the LC Collection, ensuring authenticity and adherence to the original drawings. Each piece is stamped, numbered, and bears the signatures of the designers, guaranteeing historical accuracy. In addition to this series, Cassina also produces works by prominent Italian and international designers. These include, for example, the Maralunga sofa by Vico Magistretti and the Utrecht chair by Gerrit T. Rietveld – both sharing the same commitment to structural integrity and functionalism. Cassina’s curation of such works positions the brand as a steward of modernist design history.
