Edit 02 – a celebration of modularity

We now launch Edit 02 — an inspiring magazine about design, interiors, and architecture, as well as the trends shaping our homes today.

”The formality of the domestic space has morphed, and now we can lay around and work. There’s no central place to the home anymore,” says designer and creative force Willo Perron, when describing his new modular mirror and table series for NO GA Projects. “A lot of my furniture is meant to be loungy and comfortable; they’re designed for this sort of in-between state.”

In Edit 02 we celebrate the idea of modularity, cherished by the Radical Design movement of the 60s and 70s, and a key feature in Perron’s design work. We spend time in the Paris home of Luca Pronzato, the mastermind behind pop-up phenomenon We Are Ona – a global dining collective that brings together top chefs and designers to create unique culinary experiences. Their latest pop-up took place at the atelier fair Matter and Shape during Paris Fashion Week this spring, offering a tribute to Art Deco.

We also travel to Milan to meet Italian design trio NM3. This summer, they launch their first-ever furniture collection made in wood, while still adhering to the strict design rules that they have set for themselves in their usual material, steel. “We try to create modernist design, made by architects,” says co-founder Nicolò Ornaghi. “Our design is system-based and always starts with a language. There’s a vocabulary, and then you can create sentences. If we had to define our practice, we would say we’re making small-scale architecture within a given and self-imposed set of rules.”

Elsewhere in the issue we meet up with Daniel Östman, one of Sweden’s most celebrated interior designers. After years of designing tailor-made furniture for the homes he creates, he is now working on his first sofa for production – humbly named Don, as in the Don of sofas.

”Furniture often feel designed for impact rather than actual use,” Östman states. ”More subtle qualities, or simply a well-made piece of furniture, don’t always get the recognition they deserve.”
