For more than 150 years, Wigells has been crafting furniture in Småland. A curated selection from the collection is now available at Nordiska Galleriet.
Few pieces of furniture are as closely associated with Swedish design as the spindle chair. Simple in its expression and built to last for generations, it has become an enduring part of Sweden’s furniture heritage. The story of the Swedish spindle chair begins in Småland.
In 1868, Carl-Johan Wigell founded Bröderna Wigells Stolfabrik in Malmbäck. That same year, production began on the Classic – the company’s first chair, one of Sweden’s earliest serially produced spindle chairs, and a model that remains in production more than 150 years later.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, the Swedish spindle chair evolved from local craftsmanship into industrial production. Wigells was at the forefront of this transformation and today stands as one of Sweden’s oldest continuously operating furniture manufacturers.
Over the decades, the spindle chair has been reinterpreted and refined by many of Sweden’s most influential designers. At Wigells, however, the original tradition has continued uninterrupted since 1868. The Classic is still crafted in Malmbäck according to the same fundamental principles on which it was first created, while production has evolved through modern manufacturing and generations of craftsmanship.

Today, the Wigells collection includes the original Classic spindle chair alongside models such as Florida and Bas. Together, they demonstrate how the company combines a living furniture heritage with contemporary design. Across the collection, the same commitment to materials, craftsmanship and longevity remains – furniture crafted in Småland and designed to be lived with for generations.

A curated selection from the Wigells collection is now available at Nordiska Galleriet. With Classic, Florida and Bas, we welcome a piece of Swedish furniture heritage—where more than 150 years of craftsmanship continue to live on through furniture crafted in Småland.
