Smithfield – Flos
Smithfield is a series of lamps designed by Jasper Morrison for Flos. Introduced in 2009, the collection has since established itself as a reference point in modern lighting. With Smithfield, Morrison combines an industrial-leaning form with technical precision, pairing a low dome with a generous diameter and a precisely controlled light distribution.

Smithfield lamps
Morrison's work with Smithfield is based on a clear principle. The large aluminium shade functions as a controlled light distribution, reminiscent of classic work lamps, but with fine-tuned proportions and a more refined shape. An inner glass in an opal tone filters the light, creating a softer spread, which provides a balance between direct and diffuse illumination. Morrison often describes his design philosophy as a striving for the self-evident, and Smithfield is a clear example of this method.
Material and construction
The lamp shade is manufactured in aluminium and lacquered in carefully selected colours. The inside is complemented by an opal glass that contributes to the visual density and a well-balanced light image. It is a construction where the function of the materials is central to the result, and where every component affects how the fixture appears in the room.
Spatial use
Smithfield is used in environments where the light needs to be precise but not intrusive. Its generous diameter means that the lamp is often placed over tables, workspaces, or in public areas where a clear light point is needed. In larger rooms, the model also functions as an architectural marker. Thanks to the clean surface and the low dome, the lamp integrates naturally into rooms with both contemporary and more traditional references.
Smithfield as a series from Flos
The series includes the ceiling version Smithfield S and the variant Smithfield C, which is mounted directly against the ceiling. Both versions follow the same design idea but provide different spatial expressions. Smithfield S creates a clearer downward-directed light, while Smithfield C provides a more cohesive, ceiling-adjacent illumination.
Relevance in international design
The fact that Smithfield is designed by Jasper Morrison for Flos places the model in a context where international design tradition and advanced technology are unified. Flos' work with the series shows how an industrially rooted form can be refined into a lighting fixture with high precision and architectural presence. At NO GA, Smithfield is presented as part of a selection where classic function and contemporary design meet.
