Panton – Vitra
The Panton Chair was designed by Verner Panton as a one-piece moulded chair with an unbroken, floating form from seat to backrest. The vision was fully realised in 1999, when Vitra was able to produce the model according to the original drawings. Today, the chair is made in through-coloured polypropylene with a matte or glossy finish, emphasising its sculptural silhouette.

Panton – Vitra
The fluid, uninterrupted form of the Panton Chair was a striking departure from the furniture of its time. Panton aimed to create a chair that was sculptural, comfortable, and industrially manufactured in synthetic materials. This vision was not fully realised until 1999, when Vitra succeeded in producing the chair according to Panton’s original drawings.
The finished chair is now produced in polypropylene and available in various finishes. The choice between matte and glossy surfaces affects how the chair is perceived within a space. The range of colours highlights its distinctive, graphic silhouette. This technical achievement resulted in a piece that is both functional and an architectural object in its own right.
Verner Panton – an experimental designer
Verner Panton (1926–1998) was a Danish architect and designer known for his experimental approach to colour, form, and lighting. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Panton was not bound by traditional materials but explored the potential of new synthetic substances and geometric forms.
His work focused on creating cohesive environments in which floors, ceilings, walls, and furniture interacted seamlessly. The Panton Chair exemplifies this philosophy – a piece that, despite its industrial production, carries a strong artistic presence.
Vitra’s collaboration with Panton
The collaboration between Verner Panton and Swiss manufacturer Vitra was essential in transforming the Panton Chair from concept to production. Since the 1950s, Vitra has operated at the intersection of architecture, design, and innovation, realising complex creative visions.
Over the years, Vitra has released several versions of the chair, including both adult and children’s models. Produced in durable, through-dyed plastic, it is suitable for various environments – from dining areas to offices. The assortment also includes the Prouvé series.
