CH23 – Carl Hansen
CH23 is a woven dining chair that combines form and function. The moulded backrest and carefully designed seat provide ergonomic support for extended periods of sitting. The chair is constructed with a solid frame of solid wood. Finger-jointed corners and a seat frame contribute to stability and a clear design expression. The seat is made from double-woven paper cord, a technique that adds strength and creates a comfortable surface.
Material options for CH23 include solid oak and walnut. Oak can be surface-treated with soap, oil or clear lacquer. Soap-treated oak has a matte finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood and develops a patina over time. Oiled oak provides a deeper lustre and protects the wood. Clear-lacquered oak offers a smooth, durable surface that is easy to clean. Walnut, with its darker tone and pronounced grain, is most often offered in an oiled finish to enhance the grain. The paper cord is available in a natural colour or black, allowing the chair’s appearance to be customised. The natural paper cord ages to a softer tone, while the black option retains a more even colour.
Use, variants and precision craftsmanship
CH23 suits a wide range of environments, from dining rooms to workplaces. Its compact dimensions make it suitable for both smaller kitchens and larger, open-plan spaces. The chair can be paired with a variety of dining tables and desks in different materials, including woven dining tables, where its clean lines complement the surrounding interior. CH23 can also be viewed in relation to other works by Wegner, such as the CH25 lounge chair.
Hans J. Wegner’s design philosophy
Hans J. Wegner was a key figure in Danish furniture design and designed CH23 with a focus on construction, materials and function. His work often takes its starting point in the properties of wood and a clear understanding of proportions and ergonomics. Wegner combined traditional woodworking techniques with an organic design language, where every detail has a structural role. CH23 exemplifies this approach, with a carefully considered frame and a seat designed for everyday use.
Carl Hansen & Søn – a legacy of quality craftsmanship

By preserving and reintroducing Wegner’s original drawings, CH23 continues to be produced in multiple versions. The series is available in a range of materials and finishes, making it possible to adapt the chair to different needs and environments.
