Multiplo - Kartell

Multiplo is a table series designed by Antonio Citterio for Kartell and launched in 2017. The series is based on a system in which ceramic tabletops are combined with a central aluminium base. The construction provides stability while allowing the table to retain a visually light expression, where materials, proportions, and geometry interact in contemporary Italian design.

The Multiplo series by Kartell

Multiplo is a table series designed by Antonio Citterio for Kartell and introduced in 2017. The series is based on a constructive system where the tabletop and base are combined in various proportions and formats. This structure allows for variations in the table's size and expression while maintaining the series' consistent design principle. The design is based on a clear relationship between material and construction. The tabletop emerges as the visually dominant surface, while the base functions as a structural foundation that stabilizes the entire piece.

Construction and Materials

Multiplo is constructed around a central aluminum base, a metal that supports the tabletop and provides structural stability, while the material's relatively low weight contributes to the table maintaining a visually light expression. The base's geometry is developed to create a clear balance between load-bearing capacity and openness around the table.

The tabletops are primarily made of ceramic. The material is characterized by high hardness and good resistance. The ceramic surface is therefore well-suited for dining tables that are frequently used and where durability is a central characteristic. The structure of the ceramic can also provide subtle variations in color and pattern, giving each tabletop a somewhat individual expression.

In some versions, glass tabletops are also available. The smooth and reflective surface of the glass gives the table a more transparent and visually light expression. The differences between the materials affect how the table is perceived in the room and how light is reflected across the tabletop's surface.

Form and Proportion

The Multiplo series includes tables in several formats, such as round, oval, and square models. The differences in proportion make it possible to flexibly adapt the table to the room's dimensions and the furniture arrangement.

The central construction also allows seating to be organized around the table without the base restricting space. The result is a table type where geometry and proportion play a crucial role in the overall impression.

Antonio Citterio

Antonio Citterio, born in Meda, Italy, in 1950, is one of the most established Italian designers in furniture and industrial design. He studied at Politecnico di Milano and established his first design studio as early as the beginning of the 1970s.

Throughout his career, Citterio has collaborated with numerous international design companies, including B&B Italia, Flexform, and Vitra. For B&B Italia, he has, among other things, developed furniture within the Maxalto collection, and several of his projects have become benchmarks in modern furniture design.

Kartell

Kartell was founded in Milan in 1949 and has evolved into an international benchmark in Italian design. The company is particularly known for its work with industrial production and for its development of new materials in furniture and lighting design.

For several decades, Kartell has collaborated with a range of internationally established designers, including Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Philippe Starck. These collaborations have contributed to shaping the company's identity, where technical innovation, material development, and industrial precision are often combined with a strong focus on designer furniture.
