domus 1950s is an architecture book from the publisher Taschen that collects the most significant articles and projects from the magazine domus during the optimistic post-war decade of the 1950s. The magazine was founded in 1928 by Gio Ponti as a “living diary” and became a leading forum for the development of architecture and design – both in Italy and on the international stage.
The 1950s were characterized by faith in the future, technological innovation and increased global dialogue. New materials, industrial processes and ideas about modern life left their mark on architecture and product design. This volume includes groundbreaking projects such as Le Corbusier's United Nations Building in New York, Charles and Ray Eames' Case Study Houses, Richard Neutra's residential architecture in California, as well as furniture, office machinery and ceramics from designers such as Olivetti, Ettore Sottsass and Alexander Girard.
The book is part of the domus distilled series (1928–1999) and contains original articles, layouts, covers, new translations into English and an extensive index of designers and manufacturers. With over 4,000 pages in total, the series is an invaluable reference work for anyone who wants to understand the history of 20th-century architecture and design.
