Jakob Wagner 1963
Jakob Wagner was born in Copenhagen and has an educational background in both mechanical engineering and product design. His work combines technical precision with a distinct form focused on everyday function.
Education and Early Career
After completing an initial degree in design engineering, Jakob Wagner continued his studies in Milan, Paris, and Colorado. He then earned a second degree in product design at Art Center Europe in Switzerland. In 1993, he established his studio in Copenhagen. Initially, his focus was on products for sports and medical contexts. Later, his portfolio expanded to include furniture, lighting, and consumer technology.
Wagner’s designs are often minimal in structure yet clear in expression. Collaborations with manufacturers such as Montana, Bang & Olufsen, Louis Poulsen, and Cappellini demonstrate the range of his practice. For Cappellini, he designed the organically inspired Branch Table.
Furniture Design for Homes and Public Spaces
In the Montana Free shelving system, Wagner developed a structure using thin steel tubes and textile panels. The result is an open and flexible system that adapts to various settings. The JW Table is also designed with similar logic. Its triangular leg gives a stable appearance and creates open space around the table. The combination of wood, laminate, and aluminum gives each element a clear purpose.
The design process begins with the user. How the product is used, how it is placed, and how it feels in daily life are central to every project. This leads to a design language that is thoughtful and enduring.
Product Development in Technology and Lighting
Wagner has also designed several tech products. For Bang & Olufsen, he created models such as the H4 and H9i, combining materials like aluminum, plastic, and rubber to provide both function and comfort. For Louis Poulsen, he developed the Ripls wall lamp, designed for public environments.
Regardless of the category, each object is based on a clear idea. Wagner starts with the relationship between human and object rather than visual trends. This approach results in designs that are practical without being anonymous.
