Edvard Munch - A Poem of Life Art Book

Edvard Munch – A Poem of Life is an art book published in conjunction with the major exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The book collects around one hundred works – paintings, drawings, graphic sheets and printing blocks – and provides an in-depth picture of Edvard Munch’s artistry as a whole. Munch’s work is characterized by a symbolist approach in which themes such as life, death and rebirth recur throughout his production. Recurring motifs and color scales create a thematically coherent visual world that culminates in the monumental work The Life Frieze. This holistic approach deepens the understanding of even his most famous paintings, such as The Scream. Seven essays place Munch in a broader cultural and scientific context, focusing on contemporary trends of thought and the places that shaped his art. The book also provides insight into his own attempts at fiction writing and reflects how Munch’s art has been interpreted over time.
