Meet: Stefan Andersson
Ceramicist Stefan Andersson, whose clients include some of the world’s most renowned chefs, has created a unique series of cups in three different designs for Nordiska Galleriet.
Stefan Andersson adds more wood to the fire to maintain the 1,300 degrees Celsius required to fire his latest creations: clay cups glazed with ash to create a distinctive surface. The collection for Nordiska Galleriet (NOGA) has been developed in three different finishes as a limited edition.

“The cups have different glazes, but all carry clear Japanese influences. I wanted to create variation while still making them feel like a cohesive whole,” says Stefan Andersson.
For Stefan, it all began with an apprenticeship under his uncle Jan-Åke Andersson, a Swedish pioneer of the ancient Chinese wood-firing technique that he himself practices today.

“Fifteen years ago, interest in ceramics was limited. In recent years, there has been a clear shift, with a growing appreciation for craftsmanship,” he says. “At the same time, chefs have increasingly begun using unique ceramics in their restaurants.”
After reaching out to chef Björn Frantzén via Instagram, he received his first restaurant commission. “I think it is connected to Nordic cuisine. Björn Frantzén was my first collaboration, so it was an unusually strong starting point.”
Since then, word has spread. Today, his client list includes restaurants such as Restaurant Äng in southern Sweden, Mont Bar in Barcelona and Miser in the Netherlands.
Although his inspiration is partly drawn from Asia, particularly Japanese ceramics, Stefan Andersson's work is firmly rooted in his local surroundings. Dalarna is shaped by a rich heritage of craftsmanship, where materials and traditions play a central role. Woodworking, the traditional Dala horse, kurbits painting and textile arts all serve as references in his work. This is also reflected in the packaging: the cups created for NOGA are presented in a wooden box, crafted from locally sourced timber at a nearby joinery.
