Azucena

Azucena was founded in Milan in 1947 by the architects Luigi Caccia Dominioni and Ignazio Gardella together with Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua. The brand was originally established to bring together and produce the furniture the architects designed for their own buildings and interiors. The result was a collection in which architecture and furniture design meet through an expression defined by Italian elegance and carefully selected materials with an understated sense of luxury.

Italian design since 1947

The name Azucena was taken from one of the main characters in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore. Since its beginnings the brand has been associated with a refined balance between tradition and modernity. Familiar forms are combined with unexpected proportions and materials as well as details.

Luigi Caccia Dominioni

A central figure in Azucena’s history is Luigi Caccia Dominioni. He was one of the significant Italian architects and designers of the post-war period. His designs are characterised by an architectural approach in which function and movement often guide the form. Straight lines meet soft curves and exclusive materials are combined in ways that give the objects a distinctive character without losing their function.

Caccia Dominioni moved freely between architecture and interior design as well as product design. He developed a design language that often balanced restraint with the unexpected. His work brings historical references and craftsmanship together with function and a distinctly contemporary sensibility.

Iconic furniture and lighting

Among Caccia Dominioni’s best-known works for Azucena is Catilina from 1957. Its sculptural metal structure and carefully balanced proportions have made it one of the brand’s most characteristic objects.
Azucena’s collection also includes tables and sofas as well as armchairs and lighting. The objects share a combination of architectural precision and carefully considered materials with subtly playful details.

Italian design heritage reinterpreted

In 2018 Azucena was acquired by B&B Italia with the ambition of preserving and carrying forward the brand’s design heritage. Several of Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s works from the late 1940s onwards were reintroduced as modern classics with great respect for the proportions and materials as well as the expression of the originals.
