The Story of the Looftlighter

In the late 1990s, Richard Looft, the inventor of the Looftlighter, grew tired of grilled chicken tasting like lighter fluid. In his garage, he experimented with a half-broken toaster and his grandfather’s old vacuum cleaner. He filled the toaster with charcoal and reversed the airflow of the vacuum cleaner – and the idea for the Looftlighter was born.

After several years of further development, Richard quit his job in 2005 and founded Looft Industries. With a vision of a world without lighter fluid, he took the step from prototype to finished consumer product, designed to be easy for anyone to use.

Today, more than 20 years later, the Looftlighter is the most effective charcoal starter on the market. Using only clean, hot air, charcoal, briquettes, or firewood are ignited without chemicals, without pollution, and without waiting time. The airflow also functions as a bellows, quickly bringing the embers to life.
