The Eames Fiberglass Side Chair DSX from Vitra is one of the most pared-down interpretations of Charles and Ray Eames' iconic chair series from 1950. The organically shaped shell in fiberglass meets a four-legged base in tubular steel, giving the model a light, balanced and timeless expression.
DSX, an abbreviation for Dining Height Side Chair X-Base, was developed as part of the Eames pair's groundbreaking idea of a common seat shell that could be combined with different bases. The concept originated in their entry to the Museum of Modern Arts International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design in 1948 and introduced a completely new type of furniture – the multifunctional chair, adaptable to different environments and areas of use.
The fiberglass shell is central to the chair's character. The material's slightly irregular surface, visible fibers and subtle variations in color give each piece an individual expression and a clear material feel. In some colours, a slight transparency also appears, a characteristic that ties in with the earliest original models.
The discreet steel base allows the soft silhouette of the shell to be the focus and makes DSX particularly easy to place. The chair works just as naturally around the dining table as in the study, hall or other environments where a pure and architectural expression is sought. For extra comfort, the model can be supplemented with a moulded seat cushion.
The chair is manufactured today by Vitra with great respect for the proportions, materials and colour scheme of the original. The combination of industrial innovation, well-thought-out ergonomics and an almost obvious design language has made the model an enduring design classic.
