Monachella is a floor lamp designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni in 1953. The lamp was created during the same period in which Caccia Dominioni worked on the Beata Vergine Addolorata convent and institute in Milan. Its understated design draws inspiration from the quiet presence of a nun.
The name Monachella refers to the black veil worn by nuns. This reference is expressed in the subtly downward-facing lampshade whose position and angle give the lamp its characteristic silhouette. The shade can be raised and lowered along the slender stem to direct the light as needed. Monachella is designed as a tall reading lamp and provides focused light for reading or illuminating a particular object in the room. The adjustable shade and slender construction combine with Caccia Dominioni’s subtle references to give the lamp a functional yet poetic expression.
