Cézanne - Basic Art Series Art Book

This book introduces the painting of Paul Cézanne and his central role in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism.

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was active in the area around Aix-en-Provence, where he developed a style characterized by dense brushstrokes, structural compositions, and a methodical use of color and light. In paintings such as The Card Players, his recurring still lifes with fruit, and landscapes with bathers, natural observation is combined with geometric clarity.

The book shows how Cézanne built up form and surface through layers of warm and cool colors. His landscape paintings from southern France are both studies in perspective and expressions of a new view of space and volume in the visual arts.

The author Ulrike Becks-Malorny has a background in painting and art history. The book is part of TASCHEN's series of artist monographs and positions Cézanne as a crucial point of reference in the development of modern art.
