Magritte - Masters of Art Book

This book introduces the Belgian surrealist René Magritte and his work in relation to both Dadaism and the broader surrealist movement. The book provides an introduction to the ideas and influences that shaped his painting – from romantic motifs to conceptual criticism of the visual language.

René Magritte's visual world, with works such as The Treachery of Images and The False Mirror, have become visual icons in popular culture. At the same time, they often remain misunderstood. Through a biographical essay, the book follows Magritte's path from Brussels to Paris, where he met Dalí, Ernst and Miró, to his return to Belgium in the 1930s when he reconsidered his view of surrealism, and up to his international breakthrough.

The book presents Magritte's work in chronological order, both in its entirety and in detail, and gives the reader tools to interpret and understand his artistry. The result is an overview of a visual language that has come to shape both contemporary art and visual communication.
