Philippe Malouin 1982
Philippe Malouin is a British-Canadian designer based in London. He works across disciplines with furniture, lighting, objects, and installations. Through his studio, he develops products that focus on construction, function, and material treatment. His design language has led to collaborations with international design brands and is featured across several categories at NO GA.
Malouin founded his own design office in 2009 after working for Tom Dixon. Since then, he has collaborated with brands such as Hem, Flos, Roll & Hill, de Sede, and Vaarnii. His designs range from dining tables and chairs to light fixtures and sofas. A recurring element in his work is hands-on modeling and material experimentation, where each object is developed through physical prototypes rather than digital design.
An example of his method is the modular DS-707 series for de Sede, where both the armchair and sofa were developed without an internal frame, using shaped foam as a supporting structure. For Hem, he designed dining tables, benches, and chairs within the Chop and Bookmatch collections—where the characteristics and processing of wood guide the design expression.
Furniture with visible construction and systematic thinking
Philippe Malouin’s furniture is functional and technically oriented. The range includes several dining tables, such as the Bookmatch Table for Hem, available in various sizes, where two solid slabs meet in a distinct joint inspired by cross-sections of tree trunks. Matching benches are also available.
In the dining chair category, there's the Chop Chair, crafted from solid wood and developed as a study in straight cuts and joints. Alongside round or square versions of the Chop Table, the series forms a complete dining system.
Malouin is also behind the DS-707 Armchair and Modular Sofa for de Sede—both examples of how he uses flexible foam structures to create comfort without traditional frames. Alongside side tables like the Stilts Side Table from Vaarnii, this demonstrates the breadth of his furniture production.
Lighting designs focused on structure and direction
In lighting, Philippe Malouin has collaborated with brands such as Flos and Roll & Hill. The range includes several pendant and wall lamps where construction is based on architectural principles. Gridlock Pendant and Gridlock Sconce for Roll & Hill are composed of metal modules in a regular structure, creating a systematic logic in light distribution.
Other examples include the Eclipse Sconce and Pole series—wall and pendant fixtures where linear elements and reflectors are combined to control light dispersion. The Bilboquet from Flos is also included in the range—a table lamp with a magnetic base that allows for mechanical light direction.
Philippe Malouin’s lighting is available in categories such as table lamps, pendant lamps, wall lamps, and shaded lamps.
