Kvist – Örsjö Belysning

Kvist was designed by Jonas Bohlin in 1999 and was his first collaboration with Örsjö Belysning. The series is developed to provide a dispersed, ambient light by distributing multiple light sources across the arms of the fixture, creating a softer and more even light flow than a single source. The construction is fully exposed and connected to the architecture of the room.

The Kvist Series

The Kvist series comes in several versions – from the smaller Kvist 4 and Kvist 6 to the large, space-defining Kvist 16. Each fixture uses standard light sources with an E14 socket.

Örsjö Belysning offers Kvist in black lacquered metal, polished brass, and raw copper. The black version delivers a pared-back, graphic expression. The untreated copper highlights the honest materiality of the design and is delivered without surface treatment, allowing natural oxidation over time. As a living material, copper develops a patina depending on placement and exposure. As it ages, the oxidation deepens, eventually forming an even verdigris. This combination of technical precision and visual aging gives each ceiling lamp a unique character.

Function and placement

The primary function of the Kvist series is to provide diffused, ambient light. By distributing multiple light sources across its branching arms, Kvist offers a softer light than a single-point fixture. Its design is created to harmonise with the spaces it inhabits. For cohesive illumination, the Kvist ceiling lamp can be paired with the matching Kvist floor lamp.

Other lighting series from Örsjö Belysning

For those who appreciate Örsjö’s approach to lighting, there’s more to explore. The Ranka series, also designed by Jonas Bohlin, offers another organic language, featuring flowing, vine-like metal forms. In contrast, Tratten reflects a more industrial and focused aesthetic, complementing Kvist in spaces where directional lighting is needed. The Star series is characterised by a tubular construction and is available as both wall and ceiling fixtures. Each series exposes the light source and can be used together for a cohesive lighting scheme.

Jonas Bohlin and Örsjö Belysning

Jonas Bohlin is a designer known for merging functionality with strong material expression, and the Kvist series is a clear example of this philosophy. His work is rooted in an honest approach to construction and materiality. Örsjö Belysning is a Swedish brand specialising in lighting produced with high precision and attention to detail. The collaboration resulted in a design where the entire structure is deliberately visible – from the branch-like arms to the long textile cord that becomes an intentional part of the fixture’s graphic identity.
