Saliscendi is a pendant lamp from Stilnovo, Italy, designed by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1957. The fixture was originally created for the Milan Chamber of Commerce and is based on an adjustable system in which the luminous body and reflective disc move along slender cables. The components move in opposite directions, making it possible to change the balance between direct and indirect light with a simple movement. Saliscendi was featured in the ADI Design Index in 2022.
The construction combines a painted metal body with PMMA diffusers and a large reflector disc that distributes the light throughout the room. The fixture has two integrated, dimmable topLED light sources with a colour temperature of 2700 K. By changing the relative position of the components, the lighting effect can be adjusted from more directional illumination to softer, indirect light. Saliscendi features DALI dimming, allowing the light intensity to be adjusted via a compatible DALI system. The movable construction and dual light emission make the direction, distribution and intensity of the light integral parts of the fixture’s function.
