Nelson – lighting series from HAY

The Nelson series from HAY consists of pendant lamps with distinct shapes and a soft light that spreads evenly throughout the room. The series is used in both private and public environments where balanced lighting is important.

The Nelson series is designed by George Nelson and is based on a construction where material and light diffusion are in focus. The distinct, geometric shapes make the fixtures easy to place in various types of environments.

Construction and Materials

The Nelson series is based on the so-called Bubble Lamp construction, where a frame of thin steel wire forms the lamp's structure. The frame is covered by a thin polymer (plastic-based coating) that gives the lamp its characteristic surface. This material ensures that the light spreads evenly and softly, without glare.

Unlike glass or metal, which often provide a more direct or shielded light, the polymer acts as a diffuse surface. This creates a soft light that works well for both general and ambient lighting. The construction is also lightweight, making the fixtures easy to handle and adapt to the room's conditions.

Shapes and Models

The series includes several models with distinct silhouettes, including Nelson Ball, Saucer, Pear, and Cigar. Each model has different proportions, making it possible to choose a shape that suits the room's size and character.

The lamps are available in several sizes. A larger pendant functions as main lighting over, for example, a dining table, while smaller models can be used in groups or as supplementary light sources. Different shapes and sizes make it possible to create varied yet cohesive lighting.

Usage and Placement

Nelson lamps are often used in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, but also work well in public environments such as offices or hotels. Their diffuse light makes them suitable for environments where sharp contrasts should be avoided and where an even light distribution is desired.

The pendants can be hung individually or in groups, depending on the need. A single fixture provides a clear focal point in the room, while several together can create variation and rhythm. The shapes also ensure that the lamps function as visual objects even when turned off.

Design

George Nelson was an American designer active during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by a focus on materials and new production methods. In the Nelson series, this is evident through material choices and construction, where form and function interact through a clear and consistent design.
