Muuto floor reading lamps

MUUTO was founded in 2006 by Kristian Byrge with a vision to offer a new perspective on Scandinavian design. The name MUUTO comes from the Finnish word muutos, meaning change – a concept that lies at the heart of the brand’s philosophy. With roots in Nordic design traditions, MUUTO creates products where aesthetics, functionality, craftsmanship, and longevity come together.

MUUTO

For decades, Scandinavian design has had a strong global influence. MUUTO builds on this heritage by combining classic values with innovative material choices, contemporary production methods, and a clear creative direction. Through each product, MUUTO expresses a fresh perspective on what contemporary design can be.

The company’s leadership highlights the importance of balance between business and creativity. It is a conscious strategy that allows MUUTO to create functional objects with depth and character. The products have a strong visual identity, yet remain accessible, intuitive, and enduring in their expression.

The Dots and other collections

MUUTO’s collections include furniture, lighting, and accessories. Among its most iconic products is The Dots – a series of wall hooks that combine tactility with sculptural simplicity. Other notable designs include the Ambit, Grain, and Fluid lighting series, as well as the shelving system Stacked and the Restore storage collection. The assortment also includes Fiber Chair, designed by Iskos-Berlin, such as pendant lamps by designer Benjamin Hubert, whose work is characterized by an exploratory approach to materials and industrial processes. MUUTO has also collaborated with the design studio BIG-GAME, contributing both pendant lamps and smaller objects such as spoons and side tables – products where function meets playful precision.

What unites MUUTO’s collections is a consistent use of form, color, and material that enhances the atmosphere of a space without dominating it. MUUTO works with a carefully selected color palette – often in shades of grey, white, or black – to create a coherent experience across the range.

The designers behind MUUTO’s products, who work closely with the company’s in-house team in Copenhagen, share a common understanding of the brand’s values. Designers such as Anderssen & Voll have, for example, contributed sofas, including three-seater models, that combine comfort with a distinct architectural expression.

Scandinavian design focused on material and expression

MUUTO sees design as something that influences more than function. It is about how objects make us feel in a space. A lamp, a chair, or a hook can affect how we perceive light, sound, and movement. It’s about expression, but also about the subtle interplay between form, color, and material.

The sensory dimension is central to MUUTO’s philosophy. Surfaces, light, and materials such as felt, aluminum, and molded plastic are carefully considered to create cohesive solutions that work across everyday contexts – in homes, offices, and public spaces. This is design that feels thoughtful, relevant, and honest.

Function and aesthetics exist side by side, always with the aim of creating a holistic experience that endures over time.

Through collaboration, innovation, and a strong focus on longevity, MUUTO has established itself as one of the most influential brands in contemporary design – in the Nordics and internationally.
