Stool 60 is a stool by Finnish brand Artek, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. Its pared-back construction is rooted in the ideals of modernism and Aalto’s concept of a universal furniture object made from Finnish birch. Since its launch, the stool has remained in continuous production, with its materials and form largely unchanged.
With its three legs and round seat, Stool 60 can be used as a seat, side table, storage surface or a place for displaying objects. The legs and seat edge band are made from solid birch, while the seat core is available in solid birch or birch plywood. The seat surface is offered in several finishes, including birch veneer, high-pressure laminate and linoleum, as well as fabric or leather upholstery with various padding options. The simple construction consists of only a few components, allowing the stool to be delivered flat-packed. Stool 60 is also stackable, making it convenient when several stools are used together. The natural variations in the birch give each piece an individual character, while the material develops a patina over time. The stool is made in Finland and is available in a wide range of colours and finishes.
