Källemo dining chairs

Källemo is a Swedish furniture producer that since the 1970s has operated between art and function. Under the direction of Sven Lundh, the idea emerged that furniture should withstand the wear of the eye and retain visual integrity. Collaborations with designers such as Jonas Bohlin and Mats Theselius shaped a collection where material and expression remain central.

Källemo

Källemo occupies a unique position in Swedish and international design history by consistently operating at the intersection of art and functional objects. The brand is known for a uncompromising stance on aesthetics and innovation. The foundation of the business rests on the philosophy that furniture should have a lasting value that is not unaffected by temporary trends or stylistic directions.

The philosophy is based on the idea that quality is a broad concept that cannot be measured in the traditional sense. The most important cornerstone is visual long-term quality. Källemo creates furniture that conveys expression, and the ambition is to work with designers who are equally aware of quality as an immeasurable concept.

Artistic vision and sustainability

Since its inception, Källemo has worked from the thesis that physical durability is a given, but that the real challenge lies in the intangible. According to founder Sven Lundh, an object must possess a visual quality that survives long-term use. This is summarized in his saying "must withstand the wear of the eye". This means that quality is not only about the durability of the material but about the object's ability to maintain its artistic expression over decades.

Groundbreaking design and material encounters

Källemo’s identity is defined by collaborations with designers who have consistently challenged the conventional image of furniture design. A clear example of this stance is Jonas Bohlin's graduation project Concrete from 1981. The chair, constructed in concrete and steel, questioned the norms of functionalism and is today considered a central work within postmodernism. The desire to experiment is also visible in Sigurdur Gustafsson's A-Eki, an object in plexiglass and gold leaf that balances on the border between sculpture and function. The name means "Watch out! Naughty!" in Icelandic, and it was produced in a limited edition of 19 copies.

A decade after Bohlin's debut, Mats Theselius marked the next paradigm shift with the limited edition “elk-leather lounge chair”, a work often described as the starting point for modern Swedish furniture design. Theselius' aesthetics are built on unexpected encounters between industrial components and exclusive natural materials. Mats Theselius has also designed Sheriff, a leather desk chair. In models such as Aluminium Chair, the armchairs Bruno and Ingo, and the cabinet National Geographic, sheet metal and metal are combined with birch bark, leather, and noble woods. The result is a design that unites Nordic elegance with a rawer, modern expression. Together with works by, among others, Gunnar Asplund and Thomas Sandell, these collaborations constitute a collection where the integrity of the materials and craftsmanship always stand in the center.

The legacy of Sven Lundh

The company is led today by Erik and Karin Lundh, who manage the legacy of Sven Lundh. The business is driven with the same focus on artistic height, where quality is defined by the integrity of the works. By letting the design steer the production, rather than the other way around, Källemo ensures that their products retain their relevance. Källemo thus continues to be a player that defines what Swedish design can be, even in an international context. For those seeking interior design with a strong identity, Källemo’s range offers objects with lasting value.
