Shaded lamps constitute an important category within lighting, designed to optimise the quality of light and create a desired atmosphere in a home. A shaded lamp has the function of spreading the light in a soft and pleasant way, which minimises glare. In our large assortment, you will find lamps selected for their design and light properties. This type of lamp is particularly relevant in social spaces such as living rooms and bedrooms, where it contributes with both functional and ambient light.

Different Materials and design expressions

Design history offers many examples of how materials and form have been used to create unique light experiences. Isamu Noguchi's Akari lamps – such as Akari 10A and Akari 3A – are classic examples. Made from shoji paper, they provide a natural, warm light. These shaded lamps are an easy way to add an organic feel.

In a different tradition, you will also find modern shaded lamps where materials like opal glass and metal dominate, as in Michael Anastassiades' IC Light for Flos. The round globes and the graphic stand have made the lamp a design reference. The PH series, designed by Poul Henningsen, is also based on a system of shades that provides a glare-free, downward-directed light.

Functional Variants: Arc Lamps, uplights, and reading Lamps

Shaded lamps come in different designs for various uses. To create a directed glow in the seating area, a reading lamp or an arc lamp is excellent. An arc lamp, with its extended arm, makes it easy to position the light over a coffee table or an armchair without the lamp taking up floor space in the middle of the room. An uplight on the other hand, creates an indirect glow that is reflected towards the ceiling, providing a soft ambient light and a sense of space.

In our selection, you will also find more expressive shaded lamps from brands like Apparatus and Catellani & Smith. These manufacturers often use materials such as brass and hand-blown glass to create light installations that have a strong artistic presence. Even the more conceptual design, such as Umut Yamac's Perch Light for the Italian Moooi, shows how modern shaded lamps can function as sculptural objects. Another example is the designer Ingo Maurer, known for his poetic view on lighting. By showcasing different perspectives on light and shaded lamps, we offer a holistic view of lighting.
